Beating Cincinnati would be a huge start if UConn plans on a late-season run

My flights out of Bradley got cancelled Wednesday, so I'm flying out to Cincinnati (very) early Thursday morning. UConn took off at about 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, so the Huskies should be in the Queen City by about 8-8:30 p.m.

No other way to slice it, this is a HUGE game for UConn. The Bearcats represent one of their final Top 25-level RPI opponents the rest of the way (Cincy was No. 28 in RPI as of Wednesday afternoon). A win on the road against an NCAA tourney-level team would be huge for UConn. Then again, the Huskies need to win just about every one of their remaining games if they want to earn an at-large NCAA tourney bid. But not necessarily every game. Maybe 10 of its final 12, and they still could be in business without having to win the AAC tourney.

And, of course, the AAC tourney is in Hartford this year, so that should give the Huskies a bit of hope if that's their only route to the Big Dance.

It starts Thursday night. UConn really needs to beat the Bearcats to keep hope alive.

(UPDATE: According to the beat guys who were able to get to Cincy on Wednesday, Sam Cassell has a stress fracture in his right tibia and will be out for a while.)

That new coach up in Storrs is 1 cliche after another who uses experience or lack thereof as an excuse when discussing his players, but his own inexperience is the big problem in the recruiting wars. The new coach is showing he cannot win with the players he enrolls at the Storrs main campus. Some of the players said coach enrolls would not qualify for a branch campus intramural club. If some of these players had to make a decision with multiple moving parts it would be epic. They have difficultly pounding the mohinder for 30 seconds and then handing it off. Depending on one's perspective, it is a humorous or sad scenario playing out before the eyes of a largely inexperienced fanbase spoiled by the overwhelming success delivered to UCONN by Mr. Jim Hall of Fame Calhoun. The real fans still alive from the ancient Yankee Conference era of Hugh Greer to Fred Shabel to Burr Carlson to Dee Rowe are seeing a current contingent that could not defeat teams led by Bob Staak, Tommy Penders, or Bobby Boyd or Bill Corley or Toby Kimball or Wes B. or Cal Chapman or Gary Custick. Very sad regression to Yankee Conference status is in progress that a silly, youthful purported fanbase does not recognize or comprehend.

lol tell this fool to go follow another team. Times have changed since the yankee conference and for the better. This is a young coach who just won a national title. what more do you want? Some coaches go their whole career without one. Nice try troll.

Dave,

Long time reader, big fan of the work you do.

I grew up in CT, but went to college in Kentucky and now do graduate work for my Masters in Communication at Cincinnati. Surrounded by Cards, Cats, and Bearcats, I've had the last laugh these past 6 years. Except for cards fans i guess.

I'll be on campus teaching today, and will be at the game tonight, NOT wearing white. Is their shootaround open to the public? I'd love to check it out. Shoot me an email at pcmartin925@gmail.com.

Thanks, and go huskies

Perhaps the sleddogs could schedule at least a minimum 10 games per campaign versus Coppin State University of Bowie, Maryland so the fanbase can remember what it looks like for the home team to score some markers. Do not be fearful to go on the road to The Soft Shell Crab Cake State of confusion to display sledteam wares in a hostile environ. Amoeba could look like a Div I project too. A win-win scenario.
