UConn to face Oregon in PK80 opening game, either Georgetown, Michigan State to follow

The brackets for the inaugural PK80 Invitational on Thanksgiving week in Portland, Oregon were revealed today. UConn opens up on Thanksgiving (time to be determined) against Oregon. The Huskies will face either Georgetown or Michigan State the following day, and move on from there.

Here's the press release:

The UConn men’s basketball team will challenge 2017 Final Four participant Oregon on Thanksgiving night, Nov. 23, in the first round of the “Victory” bracket at PK80, the 16-team, early-season tournament set in Portland, Ore., to honor the 80th birthday of Nike co-founder and Hall of Famer Phil Knight.

The format consists of two eight-team brackets running simultaneously at the Moda Center and the Veterans Memorial Coliseum, both in Portland. Games will be played on Thursday, Nov. 23, Friday, Nov. 24 and Sunday, Nov. 26, with the crowning of two champions on Sunday.

The Huskies and the Ducks – who met for the first time last year at the Maui Jim Maui Invitational in Hawaii – are scheduled to play in the second game of the Thanksgiving evening doubleheader at the Moda Center, with Michigan State taking on Georgetown in the opener of the evening twinbill.

In the Thanksgiving afternoon doubleheader in the “Victory” bracket at the Moda Center, North Carolina will meet Portland and Arkansas will take on Oklahoma. The afternoon winners and losers will meet in an afternoon doubleheader and the winners and losers of Thursday’s evening games will clash in an evening doubleheader on Friday at Veterans Memorial Coliseum – meaning UConn will meet either Michigan State or Georgetown on Friday night.

In the “Motion” bracket, Duke meets Portland State and Butler challenges Texas in the Thursday afternoon doubleheader, while Florida plays Stanford and Gonzaga takes on Ohio State in the Thursday evening twinbill, all at Veterans Memorial Coliseum.

Game times and television information are still to be determined.

Oregon defeated UConn in Maui, 79-69, last November in Maui. The Ducks, nationally-ranked throughout last season, went on to reach the Final Four before losing to eventual NCAA champion North Carolina.

The Huskies have a long history with former Big East Conference foe Georgetown, with 66 meetings on the hardwood since the 1958-59 season, the most recent a 72-69 loss to the Hoyas last season in Washington D.C.

UConn has a 4-2 overall record against Michigan State, the most recent meeting a 60-54 UConn victory in the 2014 NCAA East Regional Championship game at Madison Square Garden, sending UConn to the Final Four and the eventual National Championship.

The PK80 field includes 24 national champions, including 10 of the past 14 winners, as well as three of the four programs to reach the NCAA Final Four this past season.
